Karan's Corner - Staying Fit with Intramurals

Date: February 2, 2012 02:55 PM

Doing things at school that don’t include schoolwork may seem counterproductive, but intramural sports and other exercise are a great way to de-stress when the semester gets tough.

Team sports are an especially easy way to meet people, have fun, and get exercise. Vanessa Pinto is a post-grad student at Centennial who played intramural softball while completing her undergraduate degree. “It was great to get some physical activity, be outdoors, and blow off some steam with a group of people going through similar stresses,” Pinto says. “Playing together really deepened our sense of community.”

In order to sign up for intramural sports at Centennial, you need to get a team together in time for the registration deadline. The deadlines and team registration forms can be found here.

When you register, you have to pay a team bond, usually of about 40$. Not to worry, you get it back at the end of the season so long as you show up to all your games and follow the rules. (Registration deadlines are coming up in October for ball hockey and volleyball teams).

Jamie Doig, who works in the Athletics and Wellness Office at Progress Campus, says, “There is no skill level needed to be able to play an intramural; anyone can play even if they have never played that sport before. All intramural sports are open to all students on all campuses as long as you register.”

So if you are passionate about a sport, or if you want to learn something new, you can get your own team together. If you’re not much of a team player but still want to get some exercise, the Athletic and Wellness center is now open at Progress Campus, and you can use the track, rock-climbing wall, or brand new, state-of-the-art equipment.

Until October 14th, the Centennial Athletics and Recreation Department is offering free drop-in classes. These include Zumba, Yoga, and weight classes. The full schedule can be found here, along with information about registering for classes after October 15th.
